Pune: While an order, making the use of Marathi language mandatory in Central government offices in Maharashtra already existed, the State government on Wednesday again issued a Government Resolution (GR) regarding the trilingual policy.
Anil Gore, fondly known as Marathi Kaka in the city, said that unless a proper implementation system in place, this GR is worthless.
However, MLA Medha Kulkarni said that a committee of 15 MLAs that monitors the use of Marathi as official language in the State is presently working out ways of efficient implementation.
Difficult to implement
Speaking about the GR, Gore said, “While this is quite an old rule, Central government offices only in Maharashtra didn’t follow it out of arrogance. This time, the GR is released only to remind the offices to follow the rule. I have seen around 30 such circulars being given out to these government offices in the past. However, due to the lack of punitive measures, the implementation of the GR seems quite difficult as usual.”
The only achievement, Gore added, is the GR might bring about public awareness. “People take it for granted that they will not be able to use Marathi in a Central government office. Now, with the new GR, they will know that they can rightfully ask for the use of Marathi at these offices as well,” he said.
Promoting Marathi
MLA Kulkarni said that presently, the committee is trying to promote Marathi at three levels: at central as well as state government offices, for court affairs and at schools and
She added that they are also finding out which offices are failing to make use of Marathi and will chalk out the plan to implement the rule uniformly.
Prof Anand Katikar, Director, State Marathi Development Organisation said, “The whole objective behind the rule is to ensure that the common man doesn’t face any hurdles while getting his/her official work done due to language barrier. With effective management, public will certainly be benefited.”
