Pune: The Maharashtra State Council of Education Research and Training (MSCERT) has said that for this academic year, the state board will reduce syllabus of each subject by 20 to 25 per cent. Expert committees are working on each subject and the revised syllabus will be announced by the end of June, the MSCERT has said.
Dinkar Patil, Director of MSCERT said, "Reducing the syllabus does not amount to skipping any part of the course. Some portions will be asked to be completed at home by the students and some portion which is not directly related to the next grade will be reduced."
The academic year 2020-21 started on June 15, but the schools are closed due to the coronavirus outbreak in the country. Some schools have started conducting classes online, while some have sent recorded videos to students on their parents’ email addresses. The state government is planning to reopen schools in the green zones of the state from July while other schools located in red zones will be reopened in August or September with a limited number batches of students of specific grades.
Ramesh Pokhariyal Nishank, Union Minister for Human Resources and Development, had also recently tweeted that the parents and teachers have demanded to reduce the syllabus for this year considering the unprecedented situation due to Covid-19. But the state government has initiated this plan way before the union minister hinted at it.
Patil said, "Only after the committees headed by subject experts submit their report, a final decision will be taken in this regard. The experts are considering all aspects while cutting short any part of the syllabus." "After the final decision is taken, the revised syllabus will be declared by the month-end. Also, we are going to put out in public the reduction and changes made in the syllabus for the benefit of students, parents and teachers," Patil added.
