Maharashtra final year exams: 100 per cent attendance mandatory for all teachers

Mumbai: The final year exams are slated to be scheduled from October 1 to 31 via online mode, the state higher and technical education department decided to make attendance mandatory for all teachers associated with the university as well as its affiliated colleges and self-financed colleges for conducting the exams.

According to an order issued by the department, the results of the online examinations need to be out by the first week of November. Since lockdown imposed in March, the work at educational institutes across the nation is carried online or only limited staff is allowed to work from the office.

The order, however, did not find favour among many teachers. According to Hindustan Times, a statement by the Bombay University and College Teachers’ Union (BUCTU), from the letter addressed to CM Uddhav Thackeray, read, “The GR is in complete contradiction to the state government order (Mission Begin Again) dated August 31 and exhibits a disconnect with the grim reality of surge in Covid-19 cases in the state at present.”

“With the present surge in Covid-19 cases, implementation of this GR will lead to a serious compromise of health and life of staff that will ultimately adversely affect the smooth functioning of examinations,” it adds.

Meanwhile, the department has also setup a 16-member team to analyse all features of the National Education Policy (NEP). The team, which will be presided by Vasudha Kamat – a member of the Kasturirangan committee that formulated the NEP is likely to submit a report to the government within three months.
