After days of sweltering heat and mounting concerns over shrinking water reserves, parts of Mumbai finally received rainfall on Sunday. However, meteorologists say the monsoon has yet to fully establish itself across the city, with dry air continuing to weaken rainfall over several areas.
The showers brought temporary relief from high temperatures and humidity, particularly across the suburbs, but rainfall remained patchy. While some neighbourhoods recorded moderate showers, several parts of south Mumbai saw only light rain or cloudy skies.
According to weather experts, the uneven rainfall pattern is linked to the intrusion of dry air into the lower atmosphere. The dry air is preventing moisture-laden monsoon winds from developing into widespread rain-bearing clouds, resulting in scattered rather than continuous showers. Rain Offers Relief Amid Water Concerns The rainfall comes at a crucial time for Mumbai, which has been grappling with low reservoir levels following a delayed and weak start to the southwest monsoon.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has already introduced water conservation measures after storage levels in the city's seven lakes fell sharply in recent weeks. Although Sunday's showers helped cool temperatures, officials say sustained rainfall over the city's catchment areas will be necessary to significantly improve water availability.
Meteorologists explain that the southwest monsoon has not yet fully strengthened over Maharashtra. Dry air moving into the region has interrupted the normal flow of moisture, making it difficult for rain clouds to develop uniformly. As a result, rainfall has varied considerably across Mumbai, with suburbs experiencing more activity than several southern parts of the city. Similar conditions have also contributed to a rainfall deficit across large parts of Maharashtra and western India this month.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) expects monsoon conditions to gradually improve over the coming days as the Arabian Sea branch becomes more active. Forecasts indicate that rainfall activity across Mumbai and Maharashtra is likely to increase later this week, bringing more widespread showers. Until then, weather experts say residents should expect intermittent rain, humid conditions, and significant variations in rainfall across different parts of the city.
