NGO will hold stage play, demands ban on alcohol

PUNE: Swamini Darubandi Andolan Samiti of Yavatmal, along with Saad Manuskichi Foundation of the city, will be holding a stage play and talk on Thursday at Jawaharlal Nehru Sanskrutik Kendra, Ghole Road, at 6 pm. The event is being held by the women, who have been victims of domestic violence by husbands and family members under the influence of alcohol.

From 2015, a mass agitation of women started in Yavatmal demanding a total ban on manufacture, sale and consumption of liquor in the town and it was led by Mahesh Pawar. Addressing a press conference on Monday, Pawar said, “Yavatmal is famous for farmers’ suicides and is affected by liquor issues more than Chandrapur, where prohibition is in place. Despite several rallies and agitations, the government is not responding to the issue.”

“We are organising a stage play and talk by the women, who are victims of domestic violence and are fighting for liquor ban for years together. There will be an entry fee for the programme through which funds will be raised for the fellowship of children of these women,” he said.
