Satara-based government school teacher invited at IATEFL

Pune: Satara-based Zilla Parishad school teacher Balaji Jadhav is the only Indian teacher invited to attend a conference of International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL) at Brighton, England which is being held from April 10 to 13.

Jadhav is a teacher of a Marathi medium school at Pulkoti, which is a predominantly drought-prone village in Satara district.

“I believe that everyone should be able to communicate and connect with people globally and then I started learning English from past four years," said Jadhav who received his school education in Marathi. "I used search engines and navigated through several websites for learning English,” said Jadhav.

Currently, he is taking pains to develop spoken English skills of around 70 students from Std I to IV in his school. Jadhav's teaching methods include tutorials from YouTube, Internet open sources for spelling game, alphabets, make sentences which make learning process interesting and easier.

“Students in this school were reluctant to learn English as they had a fear of the language. It took a while and few easy methods to counsel and teach the language. Moreover, ICT software came as the best aid for teaching and learning,” said Jadhav.

He stated that the most interesting factor of teaching English to students is that in the process of teaching, he also is working on improving the language.

Recently, he has managed to develop an ICT lab at his school with the help of crowd-sourcing funds from parents of the students in the school. Now, there are 15 computers in the lab.

Jadhav has also developed an application in Marathi to help students from Std I to IV to cope with competitive exams.

For the last two years, Jadhav has been a member of IATEFL, an organisation of English teachers from across the world. Out of 30 applicants, Jadhav has been selected to represent India at the global level.
