Anthropic on Monday announced that it will enable Indian organisations to process requests to its Claude AI model on local servers in the coming weeks, marking a major step in its India expansion as demand for data sovereignty grows.

The company said Claude will be available within country inference in India through Amazon Bedrock, Amazon Web Services' platform for building and deploying generative AI applications.

This means requests sent to Claude through the India endpoint will be processed on servers located within the country, allowing organisations to keep sensitive data inside India's borders.

The move brings Anthropic in line with rivals OpenAI and Google, both of which already offer local data processing for their AI models in India.

Anthropic said local inference has been one of the most frequent requests from Indian enterprises and is expected to accelerate the adoption of Claude across sectors such as banking, insurance, telecommunications and government, where data localisation is a key requirement.

"Bringing Claude inference to India is a turning point for enterprise AI in this country," said Irina Ghose, Managing Director, India, Anthropic.

"India's banks, insurers, telecoms, and public sector organisations manage the data of over a billion people. When that data can stay in India, AI moves from pilot projects into mission-critical systems," Ghose said.

Welcoming the announcement, AWS India and South Asia President Sandeep Dutta said India is at an inflection point in its AI journey, with institutions across sectors preparing to deploy frontier AI at scale.

Anthropic expands India footprint

The announcement comes as Anthropic strengthens its presence in one of its fastest-growing markets. The company recently began testing subscription pricing for Claude in Indian rupees, although payments are currently limited to credit and debit cards.

Anthropic opened its first India office in Bengaluru in February 2026, following its India expansion announcement in October 2025. Since then, the company says it has significantly expanded its local team to support enterprises, startups and digital-native businesses building AI applications on Claude.

The latest announcement also follows the temporary suspension of global access to Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models in June after a US government export-control directive citing national security concerns. Access to the models was restored on July 1.
