

Iconic playback singer Asha Bhosle passed away in Mumbai on Sunday at the age of 92. The news was confirmed by her son, Anand Bhosle. Speaking to reporters outside the hospital, Anand said, "She passed away today. Those who wish to pay their final respects may visit her residence tomorrow at 11 a.m. The last rites will be conducted tomorrow at 4 p.m. at Shivaji Park."
The legendary singer passed away at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai due to multi-organ failure, hospital sources confirmed. According to an update on X from her granddaughter Zanai, Asha Bhosle was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital on April 11, suffering from severe exhaustion and a chest infection.
Asha Bhosle built a unique identity in Indian cinema with her versatility across cabaret, Western-style songs, ghazals, and playback singing. She delivered iconic tracks like “Aaja Aaja,” “Piya Tu Ab Toh Aaja,” and “Yeh Mera Dil,” and earned National Awards for her performances in Umrao Jaan (1981) and Ijaazat (1987).
Asha Bhosle’s began singing at the age of 10 with her debut in the 1943 Marathi film Majha Bal, and entered Hindi cinema in 1948. Her breakthrough came in the 1950s with Naya Daur (1957), establishing her as a leading playback voice of the era. Despite competition from legendary contemporaries, she went on to record more songs than any other female playback singer of her time.
In addition to her film work, she pursued international collaborations, independent music projects, and acting, gaining worldwide acclaim that included Grammy nominations. Renowned for performing in numerous languages, she holds a Guinness World Record for the highest number of studio recordings. Her achievements were recognized with the Padma Vibhushan and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
