Indian state-owned LPG importers have jointly issued a tender for approximately 2.75 million metric tons of liquefied petroleum gas from the United States, with delivery scheduled for 2027, according to a document reviewed by Reuters on Friday.
Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum are looking to secure four very large gas carrier shipments per month.
Each shipment will contain 46,000 tons of liquefied gas, evenly divided between propane and butane, to be delivered monthly throughout 2027.
The tender also requests one 45,000-ton cargo per month on a free-on-board basis, according to the document.
The tender remains valid until October 22. LPG, or liquefied petroleum gas, is composed of propane and butane.
India is the world’s second-largest LPG importer, ranking behind China.
In 2025, about 90% of its 21.85 million metric tons of LPG imports came from the Middle East, and imports made up roughly 66% of India’s total LPG consumption, according to government data.
The U.S.-Israeli war against Iran, which began in late February and severely disrupted fuel supplies, prompted the Indian government in March to implement emergency measures, redirecting petrochemical feedstocks from industrial use to households, where LPG is used as cooking fuel.
