Sushant Singh Rajput’s death: Rhea Chakraborty’s CBI tweet to Amit Shah and the celeb-shaming trend

Sushant Singh Rajput, who had starred in a critically acclaimed film ‘Chhichhore’ about suicide prevention and sensitivity, died by suicide on June 14. It has been a little over a month since his sudden demise and several people including some from the political corridors, have hinted at foul play in his passing away.

Two days back, on July 14, Amit Shah sent a letter to Bihar’s Jan Adhikar Party President Pappu Yadav, after the latter asked for a CBI enquiry into the actor’s death. In the letter, the Union Home Minister acknowledged Pappu Yadav’s request and said that it was being forwarded to the concerned ministry.

Today, Sushant’s girlfriend, Rhea Chakraborty, took her social media handles on Twitter and Instagram to request the Union Home Minister Amit Shah to initiate a CBI probe in Sushant Singh Rajput’s suicide case.

Using a Twitter thread to raise her concern, Rhea wrote, “Respected @amitshahofficial sir, I’m Sushant Singh Rajput’s girlfriend, Rhea Chakraborty. It is now over a month since his sudden demise. I have complete faith in the government, however, in the interest of justice, I request you with folded hands to initiate a CBI enquiry into this matter. I only want to understand what pressures prompted Sushant to take this step. Yours sincerely Rhea Chakraborty #satyamevajayate.”

She shared the same text on her Instagram profile, along with a photograph of the Bollywood star.

Earlier in the day, the actress had shared a screenshot of a message she received on Instagram where a user threatened her with rape and murder. The reader’s message said that she will “make sure” Rhea is “raped and murdered.”

Sharing the screenshot of the message, the actress wrote: “I was called a gold digger... I kept quiet. I was called a murderer... I kept quiet. I was slut-shamed... I kept quiet. But how does my silence give you the right to tell me that you will get me RAPED and MURDERED if I don’t commit suicide @mannu_raaut?.”

“Do you realize the seriousness of what you have said? These are crimes, and by law no one, I repeat NO ONE should be subjected to this kind of toxicity and harassment. I request @cyber_crime_helpline @cybercrimeindia to please take the necessary action. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH,” she stated.

The trend
This is not the first time when Indian society has reacted with dangerous threats and toxic comments after a celebrity’s personal tragedy. In most cases, the people being threatened by social media users have been women close to the celebrity in question. One of the most famous examples of being at the receiving end of threats, trolling, and hate, is of Bollywood star, Anushka Sharma, who was widely blamed for Virat Kohli’s poor performance. Kohli is the Indian cricket team’s captain and also happened to be her romantic partner back then. She was accused of “being a distraction” and was entirely blamed for the cricket star’s bad performance in the 2015 ICC ODI World Cup semifinal.

Before his death, Sushant Singh Rajput and Rhea Chakraborty had dated for some time. It was reported that they even lived together in Sushant’s apartment in Bandra, until recently. Although Rhea did not attend his funeral, she visited Cooper Hospital, where the actor was taken before being declared dead.

Mumbai’s Bandra Police has recorded Rhea Chakraborty’s statement along with 30 others regarding Sushant Singh Rajput’s death. In her statement, the actress had revealed that Sushant Singh Rajput had ended his contract with Yash Raj Films and had asked her to do the same.
