On Tuesday, January 20, 2026, the Bharatiya Janata Party chose Nitin Nabin as its new National President at the Sangathan Parv organisational election event held at the party's headquarters in New Delhi. At 45, Nabin is the youngest individual to assume this role, signifying a notable generational change in the BJP's senior organisational leadership.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Nabin on his election, humorously remarking that Nabin would now be his 'boss' in party affairs while he would continue as a 'worker' of the BJP. On stage were former BJP national president J.P. Nadda, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, and BJP’s National Returning Officer for Sangathan Parv, K. Laxman. K. Laxman officially declared Nabin's election and presented him with the election certificate.
On Monday, January 19, 2026, the BJP announced Nitin Nabin as the only candidate for the position following the completion of the nomination and scrutiny process, which resulted in no other challengers, ensuring his unopposed election as the party's 12th national president.
Nabin, appointed as the National Working President on December 14, 2025, was strongly supported by the party's senior leaders, including Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and the outgoing president J.P. Nadda. As the only contender, he was officially elected by the electoral college, which consists of members from the BJP's national and state councils. The election adhered to BJP regulations, necessitating a candidate to be nominated by at least 20 members of the electoral college from a state and to have at least 15 years of party membership.
In his speech to the assembly, Prime Minister Modi stated that the organizational election process was carried out democratically, starting from the party's smallest units up to the national president's position, in accordance with the BJP's constitution. He mentioned that this process demonstrated the party's commitment to democracy, organizational discipline, and a focus on its workers, and he congratulated party members nationwide for their role in its success.
Ex-president J.P. Nadda extended his congratulations to Nabin, labeling the event as historic. He characterized Nabin as youthful, dynamic, and ideologically advanced, highlighting that he had been an MLA five times at a young age. Nadda expressed gratitude to PM Modi for offering vision and continuous guidance to the party, even while managing governance duties.
