A new political clash emerged in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday when opposition parties introduced a no-confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla, leading to a heated debate between the government and opposition members.
The proposal has highlighted the overdue matter of selecting a Deputy Speaker, with opposition leaders contending that the ongoing vacancy has led to a constitutional imbalance in the operations of the lower house of Parliament.
K. C. Venugopal, a prominent figure in the Indian National Congress, stated that the government had not appointed a Deputy Speaker for many years, leading to what he described as a constitutional void in the House.
He contended that not having a Deputy Speaker weakens parliamentary traditions and urged for the prompt election of a presiding officer to manage the proceedings during the resolution debate.
BJP Responds Strongly
Officials from the governing Bharatiya Janata Party firmly rejected the allegations made by the opposition.
Veteran BJP member Ravi Shankar Prasad rejected the allegations as baseless, contending that the opposition's concerns were without substance. He asserted that the critique was driven by political motives and emphasized that the operation of Parliament had not been impacted as claimed by opposition members.
Role Of Deputy Speaker
The position of Deputy Speaker, often occupied by a member from the opposition in numerous parliamentary sessions, has consistently been a source of dispute between the governing coalition and opposition parties.
