Pune: In a significant crackdown, the Hadapsar Police arrested a young woman engaged in the illegal sale of medications primarily used as painkillers and anesthetics, which were being misused for intoxication. The police seized 160 bottles of Mephentermine Sulfate, commonly known as Termin, with a market value of ₹1 lakh.
The accused, identified as Ambika alias Neha Anand Singh Thakur (26), resides in Malwadi, Hadapsar. A case has been registered against her at the Hadapsar Police Station under relevant sections of the law.
The Hadapsar Police, during a routine patrol on Thursday, December 26, received a tip-off about Ambika Thakur selling controlled medications without authorization. Acting promptly, a team led by Senior Police Inspector Santosh Pandhare, Assistant Inspector Arjun Kudale, and Sub-Inspector Mahesh Kawale detained Thakur. Upon searching her, the team recovered 160 bottles of Mephentermine Sulfate, a medication often misused for recreational purposes.
Police investigations revealed that Thakur neither had a license to sell medicines nor any educational qualifications in pharmacy. Unauthorized consumption of such medications without medical advice can have severe health repercussions, a fact Thakur was reportedly aware of.
Thakur, who had previously undergone treatment at a rehabilitation center for substance abuse, reportedly resumed the illegal activity of selling medicines for intoxication purposes. She sold the bottles for ₹400 to ₹500 each.
The authorities are currently investigating the source from which Thakur procured the medications. The sale and use of such medicines without a doctor’s prescription are prohibited under the law.
The operation was conducted under the guidance of Assistant Commissioner of Police (Hadapsar Division) Ashwini Rakh and Senior Police Inspector Santosh Pandhare. The police team included officers Sushil Lonkar, Sandeep Rathod, Sachin Jadhav, Nilesh Kirve, and Gayatri Pawar.
