Pune: To emphasize the significance of pedestrians in urban life, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will celebrate Pedestrian Day on December 11. The initiative, which started four years ago, aims to raise awareness about pedestrian safety and rights.
On this occasion, the stretch of Laxmi Road between Kunte Chowk and Garud Ganpati Chowk will be closed to vehicular traffic from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
The PMC has planned a series of activities, workshops, and entertainment programs to engage citizens and promote the message of pedestrian importance.
Planned Activities and Initiatives
Decorated Streets: The Road Department of PMC will decorate the road to make it vibrant and pedestrian-friendly.
Transport Support: Pune Metro will provide bicycles for commuters between key Metro stations, and PMPML will offer additional bus services.
Workshops:
For Children: Road safety workshops by United Way Mumbai.
For Inclusivity: Sensitization and accessibility workshops by Ekansh Trust for the visually impaired and differently-abled.
Art and Exhibitions:
Road safety art exhibition by Save Pune Traffic Movement featuring municipal school students.
Panel displays on public transport and urban development by local organizations.
Showcasing PMC's urban planning projects by IEDTP.
Cultural Highlights: A grand rangoli creation by Rang Kala Academy.
Environmental Focus: Air quality testing by the PMC Environment Department and cleanliness initiatives by other organizations.
PMC has invited all citizens to participate and enjoy the vehicle-free environment on Laxmi Road. “This initiative not only promotes pedestrian safety but also creates awareness about environmental sustainability and inclusivity,” said Aniruddha Pawaskar, Head of the Road Department at PMC.
