Pune: The drunk biker who attempted to set a female police officer and her colleague on fire using petrol, has been remanded to police custody for one day.

The accused, identified as Sanjay Fakirba Salve (32), currently residing in Pimpri-Chinchwad and originally from Pimpalgaon Shela, Jalna, has been charged with attempted murder and obstructing government work.

Salve was presented in court on Saturday (July 6). The prosecution requested police custody for further investigation, and the court granted one day of police custody.

Following an accident in Kalyaninagar, authorities have intensified actions against drunk drivers. Checkpoints have been set up across the city to inspect drivers.

On Friday evening around 6:30 PM, one such checkpoint stopped Salve, who was found to be intoxicated. Salve was taken to the Faraskhana Traffic Branch office for further action.

There, he snatched the e-challan machine from the police. Assistant Police Inspector Jankar arrived at the scene, and Salve poured petrol from a bottle onto Jankar and Sawant, attempting to ignite it with a lighter.

However, the police acted swiftly to prevent any harm, and Salve was arrested that night. The police's quick response prevented a major tragedy.

The incident resulted in minor injuries to Assistant Police Inspector Shailaja Jankar and Constable Sameer Sawant. Constable Sawant filed a complaint at the Vishrambaug Police Station. The biker has been arrested and charged with attempted murder.
