Pune: A police sub-inspector from Kalewadi police station, Sachin Chavan, has been suspended for negligence and alleged favoritism in handling an attempted murder case.
The incident, which occurred on December 22 in Pawananagar, Kalewadi, involved a grievous attack on a youth, leading to the arrest of one accused and the registration of cases against two others. However, allegations surfaced that a fourth accused, notorious criminal Prashant Dighe, was intentionally left out of the case.
The initial investigation by Kalewadi police led to the arrest of Anup Bhosale, while cases were registered against Akshay Bhosale and Pranav Gawli. The complainant, however, claimed that Prashant Bhanudas Dighe, a known offender, was also part of the attack. PSI Sachin Chavan reportedly excluded Dighe’s name under pressure from a senior local political leader.
After receiving information about the omission, Police Commissioner Vinoy Kumar Choubey ordered an immediate review of the case. Investigations, including witness statements, CCTV footage analysis, and call recordings, confirmed Dighe's role in the attack. Following this, Dighe was charged and arrested.
Prashant Dighe, aged 32, is a criminal-on-police-record in the Pimpri-Chinchwad area, with 19 serious charges against him, including murder, attempted murder, illegal possession of weapons, and robbery.
Citing negligence in handling the case, Commissioner Choubey suspended PSI Sachin Chavan.
