Pune, 3rd December 2024: The Railway Department has raised safety concerns about two aging flyovers in Pimpri-Chinchwad, recommending their demolition.
These include the "Indira Gandhi Flyover" at Pimpri Camp, known as the city's first flyover, and another flyover linking the old Pune-Mumbai highway to Chinchwadgaon. Both bridges have been declared unsafe due to their deteriorating structural condition.
Indira Gandhi Flyover
The Indira Gandhi Flyover, constructed decades ago over the Pune-Lonavala railway line, connects the old Pune-Mumbai highway to Pimpri village.
Once a key infrastructure link for the city, the flyover is now deemed unsafe, with the Railway Department previously raising concerns during the tenure of former Municipal Commissioner Shravan Hardikar.
In response, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) conducted a structural audit and reinforced the bridge. Despite these efforts, the Railway Department has reiterated its call for demolition, citing safety risks.
Chinchwad Station Flyover
The flyover near Chinchwad railway station, built 47 years ago, has also been flagged as structurally unsound by the Railway Department.
A parallel flyover was constructed by PCMC 15 years ago, but with the old flyover slated for demolition, traffic in the area is expected to face significant challenges.
PCMC Chief Engineer Pramod Ombhase confirmed receipt of the Railway Department’s letters and stated that discussions with Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh will determine whether the flyovers will be demolished or repaired. A final decision is awaited.
