Pune: The Pimpri-Chinchwad Traffic Police have taken action against 41,695 errant drivers over the past 11 months by reviewing footage from CCTV cameras installed at the city's main intersections. This enforcement has resulted in a total fine collection of Rs. 3 crore, 4 lakh, 25 thousand and 600.
Initially, 250 CCTV cameras were installed at key traffic junctions in the city. However, there was no system in place to review the footage and take action against violators. With the implementation of the Smart City project, 3,500 CCTV cameras were installed across Pimpri-Chinchwad, and the system was integrated in August 2022. Since then, the traffic enforcement process has been conducted through the Smart City office in Nigdi.
Under the new system, action has been taken against drivers who violate various traffic rules such as parking on zebra crossings, riding with more than two people on a motorcycle, not wearing seat belts in four-wheelers, entering no-entry zones, and running red lights. Five police personnel have been appointed specifically to monitor CCTV footage and enforce traffic laws.
The 3,500 cameras, now fully operational under the Smart City project, are actively capturing violations. Offenders are being notified about their offenses through text messages sent to their mobile phones. From January 1 to November 30, 2024, a total of 41,695 violations have been recorded and penalized through CCTV footage, resulting in a fine collection of Rs. 3 crore, 4 lakh, 25 thousand and 600.
To manage this initiative, one officer and four police personnel have been assigned to review the footage and take action. Speaking with mediapersons, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Bapu Bangar, stated that the scope of this enforcement drive will be expanded in the future to ensure stricter compliance with traffic laws.
