Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has allocated 20 sites in newly merged villages for the construction of water storage tanks to improve water supply in these areas. The decision was made during a civic amenities committee meeting, addressing the persistent demand from the water supply department.
The villages, including Ambegaon Khurd, Ambegaon Budruk, Sus, Mahalunge, Bavdhan, Jambhulwadi, Lohegaon, and Wagholi, will now see the construction of water tanks on the allocated sites. These tanks, once completed, will collectively store up to 3.5 lakh liters of water, significantly enhancing the water supply system and alleviating shortages in nearby regions.
After acquiring the sites, PMC will initiate the necessary processes and hand them over to the water supply department for tank construction.
PMC’s jurisdiction expanded to include 34 villages, with 11 added in 2017 and 23 in 2021. Two villages, Phurusungi and Uruli Devachi, were excluded as they will form a separate municipal council. Thus, 32 villages remain under PMC’s administration.
To ensure a reliable water supply in these areas, PMC has developed a comprehensive water supply plan. Construction projects are already underway in Wagholi, Lohegaon, Sus, Mahalunge, and Bavdhan. Nandakishore Jagtap, the head of the water supply department, stated, “For adequate supply, storage capacity equivalent to one-third of the total water supplied is necessary in each area. The approval of 20 sites for water tanks will greatly benefit these villages.”
The decision marks a significant step toward improving basic infrastructure in the newly added areas, ensuring equitable water distribution for all residents.
