Pune, 5th September 2025: After being closed for almost two months, the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) only slaughterhouse has resumed work under strict orders from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). The abattoir was shut on June 24 following violations of environmental norms, a move that had disrupted the city’s meat supply.
Officials said operations have now restarted on a limited scale, with only 10 to 20 animals being slaughtered daily despite the facility’s larger capacity. Work is also underway to upgrade the effluent treatment plant (ETP) and set up a blood processing unit to improve hygiene and reduce pollution.
The MPCB, which granted conditional approval on August 14, has directed the facility to ensure proper treatment and recycling of wastewater. Treated effluent will only be used within the premises for gardening, while any release of untreated water outside has been strictly banned.
Along with this, PMC must follow solid waste management rules, control foul odours, and submit quarterly compliance reports. An electronic bank guarantee of ₹2 lakh has also been deposited with MPCB to ensure that the rules are followed.
MPCB has warned that any violation will attract strict action, including forfeiture of the guarantee and possible closure of the plant. The reopening is expected to ease the shortage of meat in Pune and bring relief to local traders who had suffered losses during the shutdown.
