Pune: The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) has received approval from the Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT) to begin production of 400 new CNG-powered buses.
These buses are expected to join the fleet by February 2025, providing a much-needed boost to the city's public transport services.
PMPML and CIRT officials recently inspected the prototype of the new buses and gave the green light for production. Designed for both BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) and other routes, these buses will offer enhanced seating comfort and are tailored for BRT stops.
Addressing Existing Challenges
Currently, PMPML operates only 1,650 of its 2,100 buses due to frequent breakdowns—about 45 buses face mechanical issues daily—and aging vehicles. The shortage has significantly impacted passenger services, making the introduction of new buses essential.
Phased Deployment of New Buses
The rollout of 400 leased CNG buses in the first phase will be followed by 200 company-owned CNG buses in the second phase. This expansion aims to cater to approximately three lakh daily passengers, up from the current average of 730 passengers per bus.
Boost to Public Transport
The PMPML's initiative comes after delays due to the election Model Code of Conduct. Deputy Managing Director Nitin Narvekar stated, “The introduction of new buses will not only improve PMPML's services but also significantly benefit passengers by addressing the shortage of operational buses.”
