Pooja Khedkar, a probationary IAS officer posted at the Pune District Collectorate, has accused senior officials and colleagues of subjecting her to continuous harassment, including sexual harassment. In a formal complaint submitted to higher authorities and the State Women’s Commission, Khedkar detailed instances of:
Unwanted advances and inappropriate remarks from certain colleagues.
Deliberate exclusion from key meetings and assignments, allegedly as a form of professional sabotage.
Mental harassment and intimidation, including threats to her career progression if she spoke out.
A toxic work environment where complaints were ignored or dismissed.
Khedkar’s letter describes a pattern of behavior that, if proven, points to deep-seated issues within the office culture.
The allegations have prompted swift reactions from the Maharashtra government and the Pune District administration. The State Women’s Commission has taken suo moto cognizance of the complaint, and a high-level inquiry has been ordered.
District Collector Dr. Vikram Deshmukh has assured full cooperation with the investigation, stating, “We take these allegations very seriously. A fair and impartial inquiry will be conducted, and strict action will be taken against anyone found guilty.”
The incident has also reignited calls for the implementation of the Vishakha Guidelines and the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act in all government offices, with regular training and awareness programs for staff.
Khedkar’s allegations have sparked a wider debate on the safety and dignity of women in government workplaces. Women’s rights activists and civil society groups have rallied in support of Khedkar, demanding systemic reforms to ensure that such incidents are not repeated.
