
Pune: A major security breach was averted at Lohegaon Airport when airport authorities discovered a pistol and 28 cartridges in the baggage of a passenger heading to Hyderabad. The passenger, identified as 32-year-old Deepak Sitaram Kate, a resident of Sarati village in Indapur taluka, Pune district, was apprehended by the airport security team and handed over to the police.
Details of the Incident
The incident occurred on the morning of January 3 at around 10:45 AM during a routine luggage inspection at the Indigo Airlines check-in counter. Preeti Bhosale, a security officer with Indigo Airlines, was conducting baggage checks when a metal detector flagged Kate’s bag. Upon inspection, a pistol, two magazines, and 28 live cartridges were discovered.
Passenger's Non-Cooperation
When questioned about the firearm, Kate refused to provide any explanation or documentation. The airport security immediately informed the local police, and Kate was detained.
Police Investigation Underway
The airport police have registered a case and are investigating the motive behind carrying the weapon. Sub-Inspector Sandeep Karpe, who is leading the investigation, stated that the primary focus is to determine whether Kate had the necessary permits or any intention of misuse.
