Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced plans to construct seven state-of-the-art, air-conditioned VIP toilets at major entry points of the city. These facilities, inspired by similar initiatives in Nagpur, aim to provide enhanced amenities for commuters and visitors.
Locations Identified for the VIP Toilets
Deputy Chief Minister and Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar, during a recent meeting, directed the PMC to focus on improving passenger facilities by setting up VIP toilets at strategic locations.
In response, PMC has identified seven sites for construction:
Katraj Chowk on Satara Road
Chandni Chowk and Baner on Pune-Mumbai Road
Wagholi on Ahilyanagar Road
Shewalewadi on Solapur Road
Near Pune Airport
Near Pune Railway Station
Each facility will cost an estimated ₹50 lakh, and the PMC has invited proposals from interested parties for the construction and maintenance of these toilets.
Sandeep Kadam, head of the Solid Waste Management Department, stated that advertising rights at these locations could be offered to contractors to support the maintenance and operational costs.
Modern Amenities for Enhanced Comfort
The proposed VIP toilets will be equipped with:
Air-conditioning to provide comfort in all weather conditions
Advanced bathrooms with shower facilities and dedicated changing rooms
Mobile and laptop charging points and Wi-Fi connectivity
Gender-inclusive facilities catering to women, men, and transgender individuals
Accessibility features for persons with disabilities, ensuring safe and easy use
Additionally, each facility will have a caretaker and cleaning staff to maintain hygiene and assist users.
Revenue and Maintenance Model
The PMC aims to make these facilities self-sustainable by offering advertising rights as a revenue-generation option. "Proposals from interested parties have been invited, including options for construction and long-term maintenance. Contractors will be allowed to manage advertisements to cover operational costs," Kadam explained.
