Pune, 10 September 2025: The long-pending plan to merge and expand the Mahatma Phule and Savitribai Phule memorials in Pune has taken a step forward. The Standing Committee of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has approved a policy outlining compensation for landowners and tenants affected by the land acquisition.
The state government had been pushing for this project for over a year, even appointing a deputy commissioner–level officer to speed up the process. Surveys of properties and residents have already been completed, clearing the way for final implementation.
For the expansion, PMC will acquire about 5,310 square meters (around 1.25 acres) of land at an estimated cost of ₹45 crore. Under the approved plan, landowners will receive compensation equal to twice the ready reckoner rate, with deductions for construction costs, or they can opt for civic body flats at fixed rates. Any income tax levied on cash compensation will also be covered by the corporation.
Tenants will be accommodated in PMC-owned housing units, available at monthly rents between ₹600 and ₹1,000.
The project is expected to affect 592 landowners and 326 tenants, most of whom live in houses that are 50–60 years old. PMC will soon hold meetings with the affected families to explain the compensation and rehabilitation process before taking possession of the land.
