The case dates back to early 2024, when the accused, Sub-Inspector Prakash Patil (name changed for privacy), was posted at a city police station. According to the prosecution, Patil was embroiled in a personal dispute with three local residents identified as Ramesh Shinde, Ajay Pawar, and Suresh Jadhav. On the night of the incident, Patil lured the trio to a secluded location under the pretense of resolving their differences.

Eyewitness accounts and forensic evidence revealed that Patil shot all three victims at close range, resulting in their immediate deaths. The crime scene investigation uncovered the use of a service revolver, and ballistic tests matched the weapon to the bullets found at the scene.

The gruesome nature of the crime and the involvement of a police officer led to a swift and thorough investigation. The Pune Police Commissioner formed a special task force, which gathered technical evidence, CCTV footage, and statements from witnesses. Patil was arrested within 48 hours of the murders and suspended from duty pending the outcome of the trial.

The defense argued that Patil acted in self-defense, but the court found the evidence of premeditation and intent to be overwhelming. On May 27, 2025, the Sessions Court convicted Patil on three counts of murder under the Indian Penal Code and sentenced him to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for 25 years.

The verdict has sparked widespread discussion about police accountability and the need for strict oversight of law enforcement officials. While many citizens have welcomed the court’s decision, others have expressed concern over the breach of trust such incidents create between the police and the public.

Legal experts believe this case will serve as a precedent for future crimes involving law enforcement personnel, reinforcing the principle that no one is above the law.
