Pune, 25 August 2025: In a major crackdown on wildlife crime, the Pune Forest Department seized 2 kg of ambergris, commonly known as whale vomit, valued at nearly ₹2 crore in the international market. The operation took place on August 21 near Kothrud-Chandani Chowk, leading to the arrest of three individuals, while a fourth suspect remains at large.
Ambergris is a rare substance produced by sperm whales and is highly sought after by the luxury perfume industry for its fragrance-fixing properties. It is classified as a protected item under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, making its possession or trade a serious offense.
The arrested accused were first sent to three days of forest custody, which was later extended by another three days by the district magistrate to allow further questioning.
Forest Range Officer Manoj Barbole said the initial probe suggests the racket could be bigger than it appears and may even have international connections. He added that efforts are underway to track down others involved.
A senior official noted that the suspects are residents of Maharashtra and hinted at possible links with coastal smuggling routes. The forest department has now intensified its investigation to trace the absconding suspect and dismantle the wider network.
Authorities also confirmed that similar operations are being closely monitored across the state to curb illegal wildlife trade.
