Pune: Rising cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), a rare but serious neurological disorder, have become a cause for concern among Pune residents. The condition claimed its first victim in the region—a young man originally from Solapur who had been living and working at DSK Vishwa in Pune.

The young man, employed in the IT sector, developed symptoms of Guillain-Barre Syndrome a few days ago. As his health deteriorated, he was admitted to a private hospital in Solapur for treatment.

Although he initially showed signs of recovery and was discharged from the intensive care unit, his condition worsened again due to breathing difficulties, leading to his untimely death.

Rising Cases in Pune District

According to the state health department, 73 cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome have been reported in Pune district so far. Of these, 44 cases are from rural areas, 11 from Pune Municipal Corporation limits, and 15 from Pimpri-Chinchwad.

Specific hotspots for the syndrome include:

  • Kirkitwadi: 14 cases

  • DSK Vishwa: 8 cases

  • Nanded City: 7 cases

  • Khadakwasla: 6 cases

Symptoms and Impact

Guillain-Barre Syndrome typically begins with weakness and a tingling sensation in the hands and feet, which gradually worsen. Other symptoms observed in Pune patients include:

  • Loss of strength in hands and legs

  • Difficulty swallowing and speaking

  • Breathlessness

Paralysis in severe cases

The syndrome, which can lead to complete paralysis in its most severe form, has raised alarms among health authorities and residents. Early diagnosis and timely treatment are critical in managing the condition effectively.
