Summary
  1. Pune’s public transport body PMPML will soon introduce two hydrogen-powered buses on a trial basis to explore cleaner fuel alternatives.

  2. Hydrogen fuel is considered clean as it emits only water vapor, helping reduce air pollution in the city.

  3. The project involves collaboration with Maharashtra Energy Development Agency (MEDA), National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), and private firm Olectra.

Pune, 2nd August 2025: In a major step towards cleaner public transport, Pune’s PMPML is set to introduce hydrogen-powered buses for the first time. Two buses will be deployed on a trial basis, marking the beginning of an eco-friendly shift in the city's transport system. The initiative comes amid rising concerns about air pollution and its impact on public health in Pune.

To implement this pilot project, PMPML is working in partnership with the Maharashtra Energy Development Agency (MEDA), the National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), and the private company Olectra. Discussions with these organisations are already underway, and preparations for the trial phase have begun.

Hydrogen is seen as a promising alternative to conventional fuels due to its clean-burning nature. Unlike diesel or petrol, hydrogen combustion produces only water vapor, with no carbon emissions. This could significantly improve Pune’s air quality if adopted on a larger scale.

The proposed hydrogen buses will use fuel cell technology, which generates electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. This electricity powers the bus’s electric motor, and the only by-product is water.

Officials are currently deciding whether to procure brand new hydrogen buses or retrofit existing ones with hydrogen fuel cell systems. The aim is to start the trial run soon and assess the feasibility of long-term adoption.

According to Omprakash Bakoria, Director General of MEDA, discussions with PMPML and support from NCL are part of the ongoing efforts to make this pilot successful.

Pankaj Devre, Chairman and Managing Director of PMPML, said that the project is still in the preparation stage and clarity will emerge soon regarding whether to retrofit existing buses or purchase new hydrogen models.

This initiative not only supports a sustainable future for urban transport but also sets an example for other cities exploring clean energy alternatives.
