Pune’s metro network is set to expand further, with new routes and transport hubs being proposed to enhance connectivity for commuters across the city. Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol has put forward key suggestions to improve Pune’s public transportation infrastructure.
In a recent meeting with Pune Metro’s Managing Director Shravan Hardikar and Pune Municipal Commissioner Rajendra Bhosale, several significant proposals were discussed, including the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for new metro corridors.
Key Metro Proposals:
Kharadi to Pune International Airport Metro Corridor
Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been instructed to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a metro extension from Kharadi to Pune International Airport.
This new corridor will integrate with the Khadakwasla-Swargate-Hadapsar-Kharadi metro route, offering a seamless metro connection from Khadakwasla to Pune International Airport. The move aims to provide better connectivity for commuters traveling to and from the airport.
Kharadi as a Multimodal Transport Hub
Recognizing Kharadi’s rapid growth as a business and residential hub, it has been proposed as an ideal location for an Interchangeable and Multimodal Transport Hub. This development would significantly improve metro accessibility to the airport from all parts of Pune.
Passengers from Chandni Chowk to Wagholi will have direct access to the airport via Kharadi.
Those traveling on the Nigdi-Swargate metro route will be able to connect from Swargate to the airport.
Additional connectivity from Shivajinagar and Hinjewadi through Kharadi will provide greater convenience for travelers.
The proposed hub will also enable passengers from the Khadakwasla-Swargate-Hadapsar corridor to reach the airport directly.
Metro Corridor from Katraj to Hinjewadi
A new metro route between Katraj and Hinjewadi has been proposed. This corridor will provide a much-needed link between two rapidly developing areas, ensuring better urban mobility. The integration of this route into the city’s metro network will also help establish a circular metro system connecting Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, further improving public transport efficiency.
Traffic congestion along the Vanaz to Chandni Chowk metro route has been identified as a major issue. To resolve this, a double-decker metro flyover has been proposed. A similar structure at Nal Stop has already proven successful, easing congestion in the area. Implementing this model from Vanaz to Chandni Chowk is expected to enhance traffic movement and improve metro operations.
