Special registration camps organized across the state have enabled thousands from the transgender community to receive official recognition and access to welfare schemes.
In Pune, 1,113 transgender individuals applied for certificates, out of which 973 have already received official identity cards. Importantly, 805 have also been added to the voter list, securing their right to vote. Across Maharashtra, 4,504 transgender people have received certificates, 3,625 have obtained Aadhaar cards, and 1,260 now hold Ayushman Bharat health insurance cards, offering them much-needed healthcare coverage.
Officials from the Social Welfare Department said that the active participation of NGOs and local administration played a major role in Pune achieving the highest numbers. Assistant Commissioner Vishal Londhe noted that the response to this initiative has been positive, as it gives the community access to government schemes and benefits.
Chandni, president of Nirbhaya Sanstha, added that while the figures are encouraging, the actual transgender population is higher. She emphasized the need for a more detailed survey to ensure every transgender individual receives recognition and benefits.
The progress in Pune highlights how collaboration between government and social groups can lead to tangible change, ensuring dignity, recognition, and inclusion for the transgender community in society.
