Pune Police have arrested a 29-year-old man for posing as an Indian Army officer in an attempt to impress women. The accused, identified as Rohan Sharma (name changed for privacy), was caught wearing a fake Army uniform and carrying a counterfeit military ID card while frequenting popular cafes and public places in the city.
According to police sources, Sharma’s suspicious behavior first came to light when a group of vigilant citizens noticed inconsistencies in his uniform and mannerisms at a café in Koregaon Park. Onlookers reported that Sharma would often narrate fabricated stories of his “Army exploits” to gain attention and admiration, particularly from women.
Acting on a tip-off, Pune Police launched a brief surveillance operation and apprehended Sharma on Wednesday evening. Upon inspection, officers discovered that his uniform bore incorrect insignia and that his ID card was a poorly made forgery.
During interrogation, Sharma confessed that he had no connection to the armed forces and had purchased the uniform and ID online. He admitted that his primary motive was to impress women and boost his social status. Police officials noted that such cases are becoming increasingly common in urban centers, where individuals misuse symbols of authority for personal gain.
Sharma has been booked under sections of the Indian Penal Code related to impersonation, forgery, and the improper use of military uniforms. The police have also launched an investigation into the online sources selling fake military paraphernalia, warning that strict action will be taken against vendors facilitating such crimes.
A senior police officer stated, “Impersonating defense personnel is a serious offense that undermines the honor of our armed forces and poses a risk to public trust. We urge citizens to report any suspicious behavior involving misuse of uniforms or official IDs.”
The arrest has sparked discussion on social media, with many users expressing shock and calling for tougher penalties for impersonators. Veterans’ groups have also condemned the act, emphasizing the need to protect the dignity and reputation of India’s armed forces.
