Pune, 30 July 2025: A man in Pune’s Kondhwa area set his newly purchased electric scooter on fire inside a service centre after repeated complaints about its malfunction were allegedly ignored. The dramatic incident took place on July 23 at Sai Service Centre located at Somji Chowk.
According to police, the scooter owner, Chirayu Chandrakant Ghone, works as a consultant in the used vehicle sector. Earlier this month, he had bought an electric scooter for his father. However, within a few days, the vehicle developed issues and stopped functioning. He took it to the service centre for repairs.
Ghone claimed he repeatedly followed up with the staff about the scooter’s status. On July 21, he was informed that the vehicle’s motor was defective and needed replacement. The company had reportedly agreed to provide a new motor free of cost, but there was no clarity on when it would arrive.
When Ghone visited the service centre again on July 23 and still did not receive a proper update, an argument broke out between him and the staff. He left the premises but returned shortly afterward with a plastic bottle of petrol drawn from his own motorcycle. He poured it over the faulty scooter and set it ablaze.
The vehicle was completely destroyed in the fire. Following this, Jalandar Vitthal Nevse, the manager of the service centre, lodged a complaint at Kondhwa police station. A case has now been registered against Ghone for his actions.
Police said further investigation into the matter is underway.
