Pune: Mentally Ill Woman Allegedly Sexually Assaulted by Caregiver

Pune: A caregiver has been arrested by Bharti Vidyapeeth police for allegedly raping a mentally ill woman under his care. The incident, which occurred over several days, has sent shockwaves through the local community.

The victim, a 38-year-old mentally ill woman, was being cared for by the accused, a 34-year-old man hired specifically for her support. According to the police, the accused took advantage of the victim's condition and repeatedly raped her from January 3 to January 10.

Initially, the victim did not disclose the crime due to her mental health issues. However, she eventually informed her family, who then approached the police to file a complaint. Following the complaint, the accused was arrested.

Senior officials, including Senior Police Inspector Savalaram Salgaonkar and Crime Branch Inspector Sangita Devkate, inspected the site of the crime. Police Sub-Inspector Priyanka Nikam is leading the investigation into the case.

Earlier in September 2024, a disturbing incident of alleged sexual harassment had surfaced at a observation home in Pune, prompting swift action from authorities. A caretaker was accused of subjecting a 16-year-old girl to sexual harassment, including threats and obscene gestures.

The caretaker allegedly threatened the girl, saying, "You are a lesbian. Have relationships with other girls in the institution." The victim also claimed that she was forced to perform obscene acts.
