After years of delays, the Swargate to Katraj underground metro project in Pune is finally poised to begin construction within the next three to four months. The Maharashtra state government has approved an additional ₹683 crore to fund two newly proposed stations—Balajinagar and Bibwewadi—which were not part of the original plan. This move has increased the total cost of the project to over ₹3,637 crore and expanded the number of stations to five: Market Yard, Padmavati, Katraj, Balajinagar, and Bibwewadi.
The 5.46 km underground metro line will feature five stations, enhancing connectivity between Swargate and Katraj. The inclusion of Balajinagar and Bibwewadi stations addresses public demand for better coverage in southern Pune.
The state government will bear the additional cost for the two new stations, while the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has increased its contribution from ₹181 crore to ₹250 crore. The total project cost has risen from ₹2,954 crore to ₹3,637 crore due to the added stations.
Maha Metro has floated fresh tenders that include all five stations, with a 40-day window for bids. Work is expected to commence after the tendering process concludes.
The metro line aims to significantly reduce traffic congestion in central and southern Pune by providing a faster, safer, and more eco-friendly commute for thousands of daily passengers. The project will boost local businesses and real estate development along the metro corridor, enhancing economic opportunities in the region.
The addition of new stations initially delayed the project by about two months as Maha Metro sought necessary approvals from state and central governments. However, with approvals in place, construction is now set to begin soon. The project is expected to take approximately four years to complete, with a target completion date by 2029.
