Pune, 23 August 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is intensifying its efforts to recover mounting property tax dues that have now crossed a staggering ₹17,000 crore. Despite repeated reminders, nearly 7.5 lakh property owners in the city continue to ignore tax payment, with government bodies and large institutions among the major defaulters.
PMC’s Taxation and Property Tax Department has been tasked with aggressive recovery measures. In the ongoing drive, the civic body has sealed 344 properties for non-payment in 2024-25, disconnected water supply to 25 properties, and initiated auction proceedings for 78 others.
Officials have also been given collection targets and instructed to identify unregistered properties, verify property usage, and bring unauthorized modifications under the tax net.
The arrears have piled up due to multiple factors. Mobile towers alone account for over ₹4,200 crore, while disputes over ownership and duplicate claims contribute another ₹6,000 crore. Properties in merged villages owe ₹2,000 crore, court cases add ₹1,300 crore, unauthorized constructions owe ₹1,000 crore, and government-owned properties have defaulted on about ₹125 crore.
Despite these challenges, PMC has managed to collect ₹1,556 crore in property tax so far for the financial year 2025-26, from around 8.39 lakh taxpayers. However, officials admit that the sheer scale of arrears continues to strain the civic body’s finances.
The corporation has now made it clear that strict enforcement will continue until substantial revenue is recovered. By sealing properties, cutting utilities, and putting defaulters’ assets up for auction, PMC hopes to finally bring a portion of the massive outstanding dues into the city’s treasury.
