Pune, 28 August 2025: The Bombay High Court on Tuesday stayed the order that required liquor shops in Pune’s central areas to remain shut for 10 days during Ganeshotsav. Following this decision, District Collector Jitendra Dudi issued a revised order narrowing down the restrictions.
According to the new order, all liquor shops in Pune district will remain closed on Ganesh Chaturthi (August 27) and Anant Chaturdashi (September 6). Additionally, on September 7, when the final immersion processions continue, liquor outlets along the procession routes in Pune Municipal Corporation limits will also remain closed until the processions conclude.
Earlier, the Collector had announced a 10-day liquor ban in Khadak, Vishrambaug, and Faraskhana police station areas, citing heavy footfall of devotees and the risk of law-and-order issues. This move was strongly opposed by the Pune Bar and Restaurant Association and liquor vendors, who challenged the decision in the High Court.
Last year too, similar restrictions were implemented for the entire festival period. However, the court observed that a blanket 10-day ban was excessive. Following the stay, the administration has limited the closure to major festival days and procession routes only.
The revised order aims to balance public safety during Ganeshotsav with the concerns of business owners in Pune’s central areas.
