Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to bear medical expenses for individuals injured due to municipal negligence or natural disasters, as well as provide financial aid to families in case of death. This decision follows a directive from Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale, who instructed the Health Department to present the proposal to the Standing Committee promptly.
The decision was prompted by a recent incident in Katraj, where a five-year-old boy was severely injured in an attack by stray dogs and is undergoing treatment in an ICU. The incident was discussed during a Friday (December 20) Standing Committee meeting, where Dr. Bhosale emphasized the need for a clear policy.
Over the past two months, there have been three reported stray dog attacks in Pune. In Dattawadi, a senior woman’s house was invaded, and a three-year-old girl and a five-year-old boy were also attacked in separate incidents. The corporation plans to provide free medical treatment for victims in panel hospitals listed under its Urban Poor Scheme.
The PMC will also cover expenses for injuries caused by falling trees, potholes, or municipal work negligence. In the case of fatalities, families will receive immediate assistance.
Budget Planning
To address current budget constraints, the PMC is set to include a dedicated budget heading for accident-related assistance in the 2025-26 fiscal budget.
Dr. Bhosale has directed relevant departments to propose funds for this initiative to ensure timely support for affected citizens.
