Pune’s public transport authority, PMPML, has reported impressive results from its “Raatrani” night bus service, earning ₹1 crore in revenue during the last financial year. Launched to address the needs of late-night commuters, especially those arriving by train, bus, or flight, the service has quickly become a lifeline for thousands seeking safe and affordable travel after dark.
Pune’s rapid growth as a hub for education, business, and tourism has led to a surge in late-night arrivals. Many passengers previously faced overcharging by auto-rickshaws and safety concerns during night commutes. To address these issues, PMPML introduced the “Raatrani” bus service, initially on five routes, with a sixth added later due to high demand. The service operates from 10 pm to 6 am, ensuring reliable connectivity through the city’s key corridors.

These routes cover major transit points and have seen strong ridership, with some routes serving over one lakh passengers per month.
The “Raatrani” service has generated ₹1 crore in the last financial year, a significant achievement for PMPML given the financial challenges faced by the public transport sector. Nearly 27 lakh passengers used the night buses in just six months, highlighting the urgent need for safe, affordable late-night transport options in Pune.
Passengers have praised the service for its safety, affordability, and reliability, but growing demand is putting pressure on PMPML to expand. Commuters are specifically requesting new routes such as:
Pune Airport to Swargate
Pune Station to Airport
Pune Station to Hinjawadi
Additionally, there are appeals to reinstate previous routes like PMC to Kharadi and NT Wadi to Kondhwa Khurd to better serve the city’s expanding population and economic zones.
Despite the success of “Raatrani,” PMPML continues to face financial hurdles, with most of its 472 routes operating at a loss. However, the popularity of the night service demonstrates that targeted, commuter-centric initiatives can boost ridership and revenue. PMPML officials are now considering route rationalization and the addition of new buses to meet evolving commuter needs.
