Pune International Airport handles both commercial and Indian Air Force flights. During night operations, pilots rely on runway and Air Traffic Control (ATC) signals. Laser and beam lights from nearby events can interfere with these signals, distracting pilots and endangering lives. The ban specifically covers a 15-kilometre radius around Lohegaon Airport, where any use of high-intensity beam or laser lights is strictly prohibited for 60 days from May 9, 2025.

In recent years, several incidents during Ganeshotsav, Dahi Handi, and other festivals resulted in severe eye injuries and even partial blindness due to exposure to laser beams. Medical experts warn that even short exposure to high-powered lasers can cause permanent retinal damage.

The ban extends to all major public events, including Ganeshotsav, Dahi Handi, and Navratri, where laser and beam lights have become popular but hazardous attractions. The installation of large lighting structures has previously caused traffic disruptions and public inconvenience during festivals.

No individual, event organizer, or commercial entity is allowed to use or project laser or beam lights into the sky within the specified zone and during the festival period. Offenders will face prosecution under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) for disobedience to orders issued by public servants. Police have already filed multiple cases against violators during recent festivals, seizing equipment and issuing warnings. Police are actively monitoring events and celebrations, recording video evidence and following up on public complaints to ensure compliance

The ban was finalized after meetings between police officials, festival organizers, and community leaders, who raised concerns about safety and public health. The decision was strongly supported by medical professionals and aviation authorities, citing real cases of eye injuries and near-misses in flight operations.

Avoid installing or operating any laser or beam lights at public events, especially near the airport or during festivals. Report any illegal use of such lights to your local police station. Stay informed about safety advisories and cooperate with authorities for the well-being of the community.
