Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has come under scrutiny for its slow response to police requests for improved lighting on major roads and isolated areas in the city.
The lack of proper illumination has been identified as a significant concern for women’s safety, especially after the recent incident of assault at Bopdev Ghat. Despite receiving recommendations from the police, jurisdictional challenges have delayed action on several key locations.
The Women’s Vigilance Committee, chaired by the Pune Police Commissioner on September 29, had emphasized the urgent need for better lighting at isolated spots such as Bopdev Ghat, hills, riverbanks, and bypass roads.
However, many of these areas fall outside PMC limits and are under the jurisdiction of departments like Forest, Irrigation, and Revenue, restricting the corporation’s ability to act without special approvals.
In areas within its jurisdiction, the PMC has taken steps to address the lighting issue. The Electricity Department confirmed the installation of streetlights near Bopdev Ghat and on roads surrounding Taljai Hill and other hill areas. Additionally, non-functional streetlights in suggested locations have been repaired.
Still, the police remain unsatisfied. A report on the measures taken was requested to be submitted to the Women’s Assistance Cell. With no report forthcoming, the police have now issued a reminder, seeking immediate clarification on the actions taken by the PMC.
Rising Crimes in Isolated Areas
The urgency for improved lighting stems from a recent surge in crimes reported in secluded areas. Cases of robbery, where individuals are ambushed and robbed of valuables, often accompanied by assault, have been on the rise. These incidents underline the critical need for better illumination to ensure public safety.
