Pune: A 73-year-old woman was deceived and robbed of jewelry and cash worth ₹75,000 in Hadapsar after thieves tricked her with a fake free grain distribution scheme. The Hadapsar Police Station has registered a case, and investigations are underway.
The incident occurred near Gandhi Chowk, Hadapsar, where the elderly woman was approached by unknown individuals claiming to be distributing free grain to senior citizens in need. They convinced her to remove her gold jewelry, stating that their "superior" would not approve the distribution if he saw any valuables.
Believing their story, the woman placed her jewelry and cash inside a bag, as directed. While keeping her engaged in conversation, the thieves discreetly stole the bag and escaped. Realizing the theft, the victim promptly lodged a complaint with the Hadapsar Police. Sub-Inspector Mahesh Kawale is leading the investigation.
Authorities have noted an alarming rise in incidents where criminals deceive elderly women by promising free grain, sarees, or other benefits, only to rob them of their valuables.
Given the increasing frequency of such scams, police have urged senior citizens to remain cautious and report any suspicious individuals or fraudulent schemes immediately. The authorities are working to track down the suspects and prevent further occurrences of such deceptive crimes.
