Pune, 27 September 2025: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rainfall across Maharashtra this weekend, with Pune and its surrounding ghats expected to receive the heaviest showers. An Orange Alert has been issued for Pune, Satara and Kolhapur ghat regions for today, warning of very heavy rain in isolated places.
According to IMD officials, a strong low-pressure system persists over the northwest and adjoining central Bay of Bengal, while the southwest monsoon has withdrawn from parts of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and the western Himalayan region. These conditions are likely to trigger intense rainfall in western Maharashtra and coastal districts.
On Sunday (Sept 28), rainfall is expected to intensify further, prompting a Red Alert for the ghat sections of Pune and Raigad. Some areas may experience heavy to extremely heavy downpours. Other districts, including Thane, Mumbai, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Nanded, Latur and Dharashiv, are also likely to receive heavy rain at scattered locations during this period.
Meanwhile, districts such as Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Nashik, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Jalna have been placed under a Yellow Alert for thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds. Vidarbha is expected to witness similar weather over the next three days.
For Pune city and surrounding areas, the IMD predicts generally cloudy skies on Saturday with light to moderate showers accompanied by thunder and lightning, while rainfall activity is set to increase sharply in the ghat sections by Sunday.
