Pune, 26 September 2025: Solar energy is becoming increasingly accessible in Maharashtra, including Pune, thanks to government-backed subsidies that reduce the cost of installing rooftop systems by 30–70%. Both central and state schemes now make it easier for households, housing societies, and farmers to adopt solar energy economically.
Under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, households can receive up to ₹78,000 in central subsidies, with Maharashtra offering an additional ₹25,000–₹60,000 depending on system size. For a 3 kW rooftop system, total subsidies can exceed ₹1.3 lakh, significantly lowering the initial investment. Housing societies can also benefit from central support for communal solar installations, capped at 500 kW, to reduce common-area electricity costs.
Farmers benefit through the PM-KUSUM / Magel Tyala Saur Krushi Pump Yojana, where nearly 90% of solar pump costs are subsidized, allowing them to invest only 5–10% of the total cost. These schemes encourage solar-powered irrigation and sustainable farming practices.
To qualify, installations must be grid-connected and use MNRE-approved modules and BIS-certified inverters. Applications are submitted online via the National Portal for Rooftop Solar, and subsidies are directly transferred to the applicant’s bank account once the system is commissioned and verified.
Experts say smaller systems (1–3 kW) are most popular among households, offering substantial savings on electricity bills. With Maharashtra already achieving 1,608.71 MW of rooftop solar capacity by July 2025, solar energy is no longer just an eco-friendly choice but also an economical one for residents in Pune and across the state.
