Pune: Headquarters Southern Command observed the 54th Vijay Diwas, commemorating India’s victory in the 1971 Indo-Pak War, with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Command War Memorial.

Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth, Ati Vishist Seva Medal, Army Commander, Southern Command, paid homage to the martyrs who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation. The event witnessed participation from 1971 War veterans, serving officers, schoolchildren, NCC cadets, and dignitaries, fostering a spirit of remembrance and respect.

Vijay Diwas, celebrated annually on December 16, marks India’s historic military success that led to the creation of Bangladesh. The victory, characterized by the surrender of over 93,000 Pakistani troops, is a testament to India’s strategic acumen and military prowess.

Adding to the commemoration, a 405-km Vijay Diwas Ultra Marathon was organized under the aegis of the Maharashtra Gujarat and Goa Area, concluding at the Command War Memorial.

The marathon, which began in Colaba, Mumbai, on December 6, 2024, featured 15 core runners, including prominent participants like Col Mandeep Singh Maan (Retd) and Captain Pooja Mehra (Retd). The route passed through major cities in Maharashtra, including Nashik, Ahilyanagar, and Kolhapur, engaging local communities, veterans, schoolchildren, and NCC cadets along the way.

The marathon also served as a precursor to the Army Day 2025 celebrations, scheduled for January 15, 2025, in Pune. Themed “Samarth Bharat – Saksham Sena,” the event will showcase the strength and resilience of the Indian Army while highlighting cutting-edge military advancements.

This will mark the second time Army Day is organized under HQ Southern Command and the first in Pune, promising to be a grand celebration of valor and dedication.
