“Sorry Chechi”: Malayalis throng to Maria Sharapova’s social media accounts after Tendulkar’s tweet

Regretting their outrage in the past against Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova, Keralites are issuing mass apology to Sharapova by flooding her social media accounts with apology letters and notes.

This response was triggered after Sachin Tendulkar tweeted on the ongoing farmers’ protest and joined the ‘India against propaganda’ hashtag on Twitter, probably favouring the government line in the wake of International Pop star Rihanna tweet on protesting farmers.

“India’s sovereignty cannot be compromised. External forces can be spectators but not participants. Indians know India and should decide for India. Let's remain united as a nation. #IndiaAgainstPropaganda,” Sachin tweeted on Wednesday.

In an interview in 2015, Sharapova had said in an interview that she did not know who cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar was. Many had hurled abuses at her and spammed her social media accounts.

Now in 2021, Malayalis are tendering an apology for criticising her.

“When you said you don’t know about Sachin Tendulkar, we came here to thrash you. But now destiny has proven why one shouldn’t know about him. You were right Maria. We apologise,” a social media user said.

“You were misunderstood by the Malayalees, I apologize for all the Malayalee,” another social media user commented on her Facebook page.

“Dear Sharapova, You are right, we apologize for insulting you for our cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. Because, today, Sachin Tendulkar has rejected all farmers,” another Malayalee said in a comment.
