Pune: Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has launched an independent online system to evaluate the academic and administrative performance of its affiliated colleges and institutions. Colleges will be required to conduct self-assessments, after which university-appointed committees will verify the submitted data. This initiative aims to improve the quality of education and streamline institutional tracking.

Self-Assessment System for Colleges
Under the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016, SPPU holds the authority to audit the academic performance of its departments, affiliated colleges, postgraduate institutions, and autonomous colleges. However, no evaluations have been conducted in the past two years, with the last assessment taking place in 2022. To address this, the university is now set to resume evaluations.

In previous years, annual physical inspections were conducted by university-appointed committees. However, with recent amendments to the University Act, a more structured academic, administrative, and statutory evaluation process has been introduced. Colleges will be required to submit updated data through an independent online system, which will then be subject to verification.

"Affiliated colleges will now be assessed through an independent online system developed by SPPU. Institutions will have the opportunity to conduct self-assessments, after which university committees will verify the data and provide scores. The university is also considering issuing assessment certificates based on these evaluations."
– Dr. Parag Kalkar, Pro-Vice Chancellor, SPPU

Key Areas of Assessment

  • Institutional Data Collection: Colleges must update their records regarding student numbers, faculty count, facilities, infrastructure, and academic programs.

  • Self-Assessment & Verification: Colleges will conduct self-evaluations, and university committees may conduct visits for verification.

  • Deficiency Rectification: The process will help identify gaps and allow institutions to address deficiencies in academic and administrative areas.

"The Public Universities Act mandates academic audits, but this process has not been followed in recent years. Now that the evaluation system is being implemented, the real status of affiliated colleges will come to light."
– Dr. Chintaman Nigal, Senate Member, SPPU
