Pune, 24 September 2025: Stagnant water in the moats of the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park in Katraj is putting animals at risk, as the water is not being replaced regularly. During an inspection on Monday, Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram instructed zoo authorities to create a proper system for changing the water to prevent contamination and protect animal health.
The commissioner observed that the 130-acre zoo, which includes a 19-acre lake, is naturally beautiful but suffers from a shortage of animals. He pointed out that this lack of variety leaves visitors disappointed and urged the administration to increase the population of key species such as tigers and lions.
Ram also directed that animals should be housed and displayed in a way that ensures visitors can see them easily. He emphasized that improving animal visibility would enhance the overall experience and make the zoo a stronger attraction for Pune residents and tourists alike.
To support these improvements, the commissioner recommended hiring additional staff, setting up better facilities like parking and a reception area, and seeking the necessary funds. He stressed that the zoo’s natural charm must be matched by a richer wildlife presence and modern amenities to draw more visitors in the future.
