Pune: The persistent garbage issue along the route to the Bhamchandra Hill pilgrimage site has been addressed by Tetra Pak India Private Limited from Chakan MIDC, as part of its corporate social responsibility initiative.
The cleanup drive has been welcomed by local residents and travelers, who had been struggling with the waste problem for a long time. The issue had been raised multiple times by local media, urging authorities to take action.
For a long time, the main road from Vasuli Phata to Bhamchandra Hill was littered with waste from chicken shops, hotel food waste, and garbage discarded by daily commuters. The strong foul smell made the area unbearable, forcing travelers to cover their noses while passing through.
One of the biggest concerns was the impact on students of Bhamchandra Secondary School, located along the route. The unhygienic conditions posed serious health risks to children.
Officials from Tetra Pak Company, along with members of Balaji Sahas social organization, undertook the responsibility to clean the area. Seema Sharma, Balaji Ganlewar, and Nirmala Raut led the cleanup efforts.
As a preventive measure, the company has deployed a security guard at the site to ensure that garbage dumping does not resume. Moreover, tree plantation and beautification of the area will be undertaken soon, said Santosh Sontakke, a representative of the company administration.
During the cleanup drive, local Vasuli village resident Sainath Pachpute also contributed to the efforts. Due to rapid urbanization in the Vasuli Phata area, the problem of garbage disposal has worsened. There is a growing need for local authorities and property owners to implement a proper waste management system to prevent such issues in the future.
