Pune: "As times change, new challenges and evolving societal issues emerge. To effectively address these, it is crucial to combine service-oriented efforts with professionalism," remarked Prof. Milind Joshi, noted author and Chairperson of the Maharashtra Sahitya Parishad. He was speaking at the Vasudha Paranjape Memorial Awards ceremony, organized by the Vidyarthi Sahayyak Samiti, to honor outstanding contributions in social and educational fields.
The event recognized Muktangan De-addiction and Rehabilitation Centre Director Mukta Puntambekar and Jeevitnadi Founder-Director Shailaja Deshpande for their exemplary work. Puntambekar and Deshpande were presented with the Vasudha Paranjape Memorial Award, which includes a cash prize of ₹50,000 and a citation. Deshpande’s award was received on her behalf by Mrunal Vaidya. Additionally, five underprivileged girl students, including Divya Kulkarni and Saanika Dangat, received scholarships of ₹10,000 each.
Recognizing Selfless Efforts
During the event, Prof. Joshi lauded the recipients for their contributions to society despite the diminishing prevalence of service-oriented individuals. "The spirit of service comes from the heart, but its prevalence has diminished due to changes in societal, familial, and political structures. Yet, people like Mukta Puntambekar, who uphold the legacy of selfless service, and Shailaja Deshpande, who fight against environmental degradation, are commendable," he added.
Awardees Share Their Journey
Mukta Puntambekar expressed her gratitude, stating, "This award is not just personal recognition but an acknowledgment of the entire Muktangan team. The award money will support our educational initiatives at the center. Muktangan has grown with the support of literary icon P.L. Deshpande, who named and helped establish the center." Puntambekar also highlighted emerging challenges, such as screen addiction among youth, which has added complexity to de-addiction treatments.
In her audiovisual message, Shailaja Deshpande emphasized Jeevitnadi’s mission of raising river awareness, pledging to continue their efforts for environmental sustainability.
The event also included recollections of Vasudha Paranjape’s contributions by Tushar Ranjankar and Sanjay Amrute. A short film on the Samiti’s work was screened, and the program concluded with a vote of thanks by Saanika Joshi.
